The lagoon offers good shelter and is well-protected by a coral reef, making it a calm and safe spot for anchoring, especially when the trade winds are blowing. The seabed is primarily sand and mud, which provides excellent holding for anchors.
Exploring by dinghy through the mangroves and small islets is a highlight. However, care should be taken when navigating near the reef, as there are some shallow spots and the occasional current to be aware of.
I once lived in Baie Mahault and during the hurricane season, boats would seek shelter in mangrove holes near Lamentin. More recently, I stayed in Baie Mahault for 3 months. The anchorage there is excellent, offering protection from nearly all directions. There are quality provisions, free water, and some docks. It’s about a 30-minute journey to Port aux Princes by walking and bus. Additionally, there’s a prime hurricane shelter spot when you enter the salt river and turn immediately right. However, during serious alerts, it might be challenging to secure a spot there.
