The Saint Patrick region, Grenada

The Saint Patrick region is situated in the northern part of Grenada, it’s an area often described as the island’s “untamed” side, with rugged coastlines, verdant hills, and rural communities that thrive on agriculture and fishing. While Saint Patrick may not be as polished or touristic as other regions, its authenticity and charm lie in its raw beauty.

Leapers’ Hill

The region’s history is as dramatic as its landscapes. It was here, in 1651, that the island’s indigenous Carib people made their final stand against French colonisers. The story of their resistance is tragically immortalised at Leapers’ Hill, a cliff where many of the Caribs leaped to their deaths rather than submit to foreign rule. Today, this somber site serves as a poignant reminder of the island’s colonial past and the deep connection between the land and its people. Visitors often come to Leapers’ Hill to pay their respects and to gaze out over the sea, where the echoes of history seem to linger in the wind.

The world-renowned Grenadian nutmeg

Saint Patrick is also a region where agriculture thrives, thanks to its fertile volcanic soil. It’s the agricultural heartland of Grenada, with crops like nutmeg, cocoa, bananas, and other tropical fruits growing in abundance. Walking through the rural villages, you’ll see farmers tending to their land, often using traditional methods that have been passed down through generations. Many of the island’s famous spices, including the world-renowned Grenadian nutmeg, are cultivated here, giving the region its distinctive spicy fragrance that seems to hang in the air.

Chocolate

A trip to the Saint Patrick region wouldn’t be complete without visiting one of the local cocoa plantations. Cocoa farming has been an integral part of Grenada’s economy for centuries, and in Saint Patrick, you can see firsthand how the beans are grown, harvested, and processed into chocolate. Many of these farms still use old-fashioned methods, like sun-drying the beans on large platforms known as “cocoa dancing floors.” The result is some of the richest, most flavourful chocolate you’ll ever taste, often infused with local spices like cinnamon or nutmeg.

The River Antoine Estate

The River Antoine Estate, one of the oldest rum distilleries in the Caribbean, is a must-see for anyone curious about the island’s rum-making traditions. The estate, which has been in operation since 1785, still uses traditional methods and a waterwheel to power its distillation process. A tour of the estate offers a fascinating glimpse into the rum-making process, and of course, there’s the opportunity to sample some of Grenada’s strongest rum.
